REHABILITATION OF ST. IOAN BOTEZATORUL CHURCH
Saint Ioan Botezatorul Church in Chitila is the main church of the city and has a beautiful architecture, designed in 1912-1913, but currenty being in a poor visual state, due to degradation of the facades, roof and ornaments. After a long research and collaborations with different experts of monuments, historical buildings, facade plaster techniques an restaurators, we have deduced that the main issues appeared in time due to water damage, poor sollution for the base, sidewalks and lack of hidroinsulation at ground floor level, plus an insufficient downspounts and gutters at roof level that provoked the damaging of wood elements too. In order to solve these issues, our research targetet the best solutions to stop the rise of water from the foundation, whith injectable resin in the brick walls plus hidroinsulation of the base and foundation, sustained by a perimetral drainage system. For the facades we have proposed durable, breathable materials as hydraulic lime, in thick layer, with a solid base, reparations on site for the deteriorated ornaments and special materials for the water exposed surfaces. The roof will have a new face, but according to the initial architecture, by proposing a durable titanium zinc sheet, and the replace of some damaged wood elements. We would like to pay our respet to the original building, so the aim of the restauration is to preserve and protect the building as close to the original aspect. Together with the restauration, we have proposed to change the church perimeter, by substracting all concrete elements and refresh the green spaces, so we plan to use materials such as cobble stone(drainable surfaces) and planted areas, including a curtain of trees to protect from wind.
